A little about me! My name is Breken Jennings and I live and work in Paso Robles, California. I’m originally from Fort Collins, Colorado but fell in love with the Central Coast while studying Business at Cal Poly SLO. Throughout college and after graduating, I worked in the wine industry on both the production and business side. I am so thankful for all the amazing people and creativity the wine industry has brought into my life. It’s the connections I’ve made through wine that have made my art business possible. As a kid I loved art and drawing but it never felt like a practical option I could pursue until I made my first commissioned custom visual biography while working wine harvest in 2024… now it’s a thing!
I work in a surrealist, maximalist style, and layer all different kinds of mediums to create a single extremely detailed piece. Before I start a painting, I sit down with my clients to get to know them. We talk about their history, milestones, and the details that matter most. Then I weave those pieces, big and small, into one composition that tells their story. I work with couples, individuals, and businesses who want a piece that represents a chapter of life, a relationship or a journey. I love drawing buildings, nature, and working with bright colors and funky patterns. The goal of my painting is to portray a story in a fun, vibrant and mind bending way where you notice something new each time you walk past it.
Process: After I have what I need to include nailed down, I lay down watercolor layers to get a base, I then go in with paint pens to create larger shapes and finish off details with colored pencils and gel pens. I add tiny doodles into the shapes that the watercolor creates using a pen. These doodles are both random things I see in the paint and also small details people want included. Because there’s so much detail in each painting, it usually takes me 6-8 weeks to complete a project depending on size. I work anywhere from 10x10in up to 40x60in+ and work on canvas or watercolor paper.
