This custom visual biography weaves an entire family estate, multi-generational history, and iconic regional landmarks into a single surreal landscape. Matt and Teresa Gourley have worked tirelessly to build an incredible life and legacy together… seriously, these two are up before the sun every single day! But before their paths merged, they had each built amazing lives individually. This painting is a vibrant celebration of everything Matt and Teresa cherish, with a massive focus on their children and grandchildren, who are all accomplishing incredible things themselves.
Every family member has a dedicated "niche" in the piece that makes them special. For example, Matt’s oldest daughter, Quincie who was recently named one of Salinas’s 40 Under 40, is represented in the top left corner with picture-perfect rows of heirloom lettuce, symbolizing the legacy she is building in the Salinas Valley. You’ll spot Lake Tahoe, where Matt and Teresa were wed, the shores of Lake Nacimiento, and a miniature skyline of the actual buildings Matt Gourley has constructed over the years. While Teresa’s main wish was to make sure her grandchildren were front and center, her style is far to chic to leave out so we included the Tiffany & Co building in Carmel and some shopping bags. Other personal touches are tucked into the scenery: dirt bikes jumping over rolling hills, a cowboy roping, a classic Santa Maria grill setup, a home run soaring over a field of sunflowers, and even Kristofferson—their son Kyle’s pet fox! The piece also focuses on the family vineyard compound, where the dramatic geographic shelf of the Santa Lucia Highlands holds 16 family stockings. This is a project I hold close to my heart and hope the Gourley family can explore, laughed over, and observed for generations
